NIIT Lab@Home 4 EBDD

1. Unisoft Inc. wants to upgrade the OS of all Windows 7-based desktops in the Accounts department to Windows 8. The organization does not want to reinstall the existing applications on the system. In addition, the organization does not have extra storage space to save the existing data of systems. Identify and explain the installation or migration scenario in the preceding situation. In addition, list and explain the other migration scenarios.

The deployment scenario in this case is in-place deployment scenario. The need for an in-place desktop deployment arises when an organization decides to upgrade the operating system and applications on its existing desktops. In this process, the previous desktop is either upgraded or redeployed. Therefore, you need to preserve the existing user state before deploying the new OS so that the user obtains the same user state on the new OS. This will ensure that the user productivity is not hampered because of a change in the desktop, and no time is lost to adapt to the change. In addition, it ensures that in case the deployment process fails, the user data and settings can be restored easily on the desktop.

The other deployment scenarios are:

·         Wipe and load

·         Side-by-side

2. Describe the different guidelines that one should follow before starting the deployment of an OS on a larger number of computers.

To plan the successful and efficient deployment of desktops, you need to consider the guidelines for the following factors:
·         Hardware requirements
·         Budget
·         Number of clients
·         Geographical locations
·         Bandwidth requirements
·         Staff skills
·         Type of installations
·         Plan for handling rollback of deployment

3. Explain, in detail, the different challenges that you may encounter while planning for desktop deployment.

The different challenges that may be encountered while planning deployment are:
·         Non availability of best practices and implementation manuals/guides
·         Lack of user training
·         Lack of user support
·         Lack of required skill set
·         Budget
·         Application compatibility
·         Complicated users environment
·         Customized multiple user groups
·         Minimum downtime
·         Network infrastructure
·         Network bandwidth
·         Data storage
·         Availability of deployment server
·         Customized application deployment
